What is a SIM Card?
SIM cards are small flat electronic 'chips' which when inserted inside a mobile phone, usually under the battery in the back, dictate which network your phone uses and what your phone number is. You can also store people's phone numbers and other information on them, rather than in the phone memory. A sim-free phone will accept any of the main UK SIM cards and work ok but phones which you buy with a card in already are usually locked to that network. However, most phones can be unlocked to accept any network's card. The cheapest places to get phones unlocked are markets, I've found, but sometimes the stallholders don't have the necessary equipment to unlock the very latest phones. It's worth a try though. Some people unlock phones online and you can also get codes which you enter into your phone for unlocking purposes. (This isn't the same as unbarring a phone which has been blocked, i.e. Cut off.) There are also mobile phone shops, of which some do unlocking, but it can cost upto about £20 or more.
You can change your phone to another network, as long as you aren't tied to a contract, just by buying a new sim card and getting your phone unlocked, if required. Most networks will also allow you to use your old phone number if you wish. You need to get a code from your old network customer service, give it to the new one, and it takes about a week. They tell you the date when the changeover is going to happen, along with any instructions such as 'turn your phone off between certain times on that date'.I've saved pounds by buying new pay as you go sim cards and changing to different networks, depending on my usage, and their offers!
